What is CALC?

CALC is what we fondly refer to ourselves! Community Adult Learning Council is our full name.

What is an Adult Literacy Learner?

Generally speaking, Adult Literacy Learners are fluent in either official language, and were usually born and raised in Canada. They may be employed, whether or not they have a high school education. Adult literacy learners are looking for a way to improve their lives, however they may not recognize the skills required to do so. They may have several well-developed skills for success. For example they may have excellent verbal or non-verbal communication skills. However, they may need to improve their reading and/or writing.

What is a Foundational Learner?

A foundational learner is an adult who chooses to engage in foundational learning opportunities such a literacy, numeracy, skills for learning, basic digital skills and or English language learning to address knowledge and skill gaps. Foundational learners have often experienced challenges or barriers that have interfered with their learning. (Community Adult Learning Program Guidelines 2020)

What is family literacy?

Family literacy encompasses the ways parents, children and extended family members use literacy at home and in their community.  Family literacy occurs naturally during the routines of daily living and helps adults and children "get things done". (international Reading Association's Family literacy Commission, cited in Morrow, 1995)

Is childcare provided?

If you are attending a program free child care is provided.  Our childcare workers are trained and will take good care of your children.  Child care is provided only during the time you are attending a program.
